About Harmonic Balance
Meet Our Founder,
Science buff and Intuitive Soul
Dr. Shellie Murphy DeBruyn holds a DMA and MM from Eastman School of Music, as well as a BM in Education with a piano major from Nazareth College of Rochester. She brings over twenty-five years of teaching experience in both public schools and higher education.

Shellie first discovered the link between body alignment and singing for herself as a yoga practitioner. 500 hours of Yoga Teacher Training with the good people at Peachtree Yoga in Atlanta, GA allowed her to explore alignment more in depth while teaching voice and Yoga for Performers at Columbus State University. However, it was clear that there was more to learn in order to be absolutely exacting in her work. In 2025, she graduated from North Carolina School of Advanced Bodywork in Charlotte, NC.

As a professor of voice and a licensed massage therapist (LMBT #23042), Shellie offers both specialized body-based vocal pedagogy in voice lessons and bodywork sessions designed for more advanced vocalists and instrumentalists. Shellie's approach is equal parts science and mystical (What even IS the voice?!?!), enabling students to free their bodies and minds, while allowing a higher degree of emotional expression to surface naturally.

Voice Instruction & Bodywork
Voice Lessons
Tailored for Age, Experience, and Future Goals
Experience customized voice lessons targeting musicians ages 14 and up. Students will be guided based on their interests and goals. Genres may include anything from classical to jazz or pop styles. Although the benefits of cross training vocalists are many, someone interested in emulating Billie Eilish does not also need to sing in Italian.

Bodywork for Musicians
Optimal Alignment and Muscular Efficiency
Analysis of structural alignment and pain patterns followed by manual therapy for target areas. Clients remain clothed throughout the session and should be prepared to play their instruments or vocalize before and after. The goal is better alignment and less muscular tension in order to prevent injury, which generally results in better tone. This is similar to "sports bodywork/massage" only for musicians.
